What is a fashion statement?

Recently the 2024 met gala took place with vogue and I watched some of the fancy dresses that were on display. There were a lot of unique designs, and I know that the designers worked really hard on them. It got me thinking about how important fashion is, and what it REALLY represents to us humans. Fashion of any type sends a message, that’s why you have terms like fashion statement, because when people choose what they’re going to where it reveals how they feel about themselves.

There was a time in my life where I had a whole bunch of clothes and sneakers, this was mainly when I was in middle-school / high-school. When I got older I sorta went on a spiritual journey and all of a sudden clothes didn’t mean much to me like they used to. I’m 35 now, and clothes still don’t mean as much to me but I still like them and like getting dressed up from time to time. Well let me rephrase that, clothes are still very important to me, I’m just not a fanatic like how I used to be when I was younger. Recently I bought an Adidas baseball cap and I liked the way it makes me look and feel, so yea, I’m still aware of the power of fashion.

I mean, if you really think about it, the importance of clothes goes way beyond what most people are truly aware of. I’ll give you an example that you probably never thought of before, when adam and eve in the bible [ the first humans ever ] became sinners, the very first thing they became aware of was that they were naked, lol imagine that. So clothes are important and we wear them every single day, no one walks around with loing clothes and animal skins anymore like the Flintstones.

So yea, I personally like to wear baseball caps, I like the way they make me look and feel. When I was younger I had a whole collection of hats that I used to color coordinate with whatever outfit I was wearing at the time. Back then when I was in middle school clothes were ridiculously important, if you didn’t’ have nice clothes you would get made fun of. Everyone remembers how brutal middle school and highschool were, kids can be really unforgiving with teasing and bullying.

This is why I am a fan of uniforms, and I think it should be the norm for all schools not just some. I know that makes me appear to be a little socialist, but maybe I am a bit. A lot of adults still have scars they carry from how bad they were bullied due to not having the right outfit or the right shoes. So yea, uniforms in my opinion aren't a bad thing, let children focus on school and worry about style in their later years. I know anyone reading this might think that, that is boring and un-unique, and I agree, but like I said kids should focus on actual school work and their assignments first. That is just my humble opinion, and NO I’m not a communist lol.

So yea, your identity is in your clothing. I think women as a collective know this better than anyone, I used to think that I had a lot of clothes when I was young but that’s nothing compared to most women’s closets whether they are younger or adults. More examples on how your identity is in your clothing, take a look at saudi arabia , biker gangs, blood and crips, and the list goes on and on.

Nowadays, since I’m not a fanatic anymore, as long as I’m clean and neat I’ll be just fine. I don’t’ strive to color coordinate so hard anymore like how I used to with my sneakers or shoes. Nowadays I’m pretty relaxed with my clothing and prefer clothes that are comfortable and things I can just slip on like my Adidas sweatpants or my all black vans.

I used to be competitive in my clothing thinking I had all men and women outmatched but…...Ugh! I can’t compete with women, they have too many accessories , too many shoes, too many closets lol. But it’s ok, us men enjoy the view. One thing I realized when I was younger is that in my school the men were focused a lot more on name brand things, it was literally life or death. While the girls could wear name brand BUT they could also dress up in non name brand and still look good and still get praise for it. I’ll give you a piece of my childhood, here is a sneaker that you would get made fun of if you wore it.

Yes, those are shaqs, or Shaquille Oneals shoes. They are NOT jordans like the ones below, for any of you who don’t’ know the name brands.

These shoes were associated with your family being poor, you having to shop at payless [ a store for those on a budget ], you not being apart of the IN CROWD. Lol, whatever that is. Actually, any American adult knows EXACTLY what that is.

You see how simple it is for children to put each other in social classes whether for bad or good? This why I said I’m not a communist, but I have a little bit of socialist views. I think you can see my point now. I still remember the day I begged my mother for a pair of red and grey Allen Iversons. I was running from the kids that were going to make fun of me, lol. see them below

The list goes on and on, about what you could get made fun of for. It’s not just fashion, but that is what we’re focusing on today. Your type of phone, how you talk, how you walk, where you live etc etc, it used to feel like nothing was off the table.

Well anyways, that’s my little two sense about fashion for today. As you have read, fashion was a very big part of my life so look forward to more fashion posts in the future.
